Mr Rodriguez has written to me to ask for a checklist of my book-length Borges translations. I hope the following will be of help.
The Book of Imaginary Beings (1969)
The Aleph and Other Stories 1933-1969 (1970)
Doctor Brodie’s Report (1972)
Selected Poems 1923-1967 (1972)
A Universal History of Infamy (1972)
Borges on Writing (1973)
In Praise of Darkness (1974)
The Congress (1974)
Chronicles of Bustos Domecq (1976)
The Book of Sand (1977)
Six Problems for don Isidro Parodi (1981)
Evaristo Carriego (1984)
The volume Borges on Writing is not a translation but a record of three seminars delivered at Columbia University in 1971.
A few years ago I posted on my old website a number of fugitive pieces – forewords, commentaries, etc. – that Borges and I had written together in English and which neither the Borges Estate nor his publishers wished to make use of. When the Wylie Agency learned of my postings, without notifying me, they closed down my site. For some time they, and Viking-Penguin, were and had been bullying and threatening about any proposal of mine to reprint the work I had created in collaboration with Borges and for which I owned half the copyright. So cocksure and assiduous were Wylie & Co. in their campaign to stamp my efforts into oblivion that they even supressed conversations I had translated between Osvaldo Ferrari and Borges. The rights to these belonged exclusively to Ferrari and, at the time, the translation rights to me. These conversations were never part of the Borges Estate controlled by María Kodama. In fact, she had years before taken Ferrari to court over the matter and lost in an expensive lawsuit.
All this is by way of apologizing to Mr Rodriguez and others for not having got around to posting any of my introductions to my Millennium Borges project. Instead, for the time being, I have been happily engaged in a series of writing projects of my own.
